Details: Zelenskyy briefed the senators on combined Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure facilities and stressed the need to supply Ukraine with air defence missiles.
Quote: "We see many various factors that make Putin – and, by extension, all of Russia – significantly weaker. It is crucial to maximise every possible form of pressure to finally force the Russians to end this war. We discussed the current state of the senators' sanctions bill, which can have a substantial impact on the positions of Russia and all those aiding it in this war."
Details: Zelenskyy also updated the senators on interactions with US President Donald Trump's team, noting that "we are now very close to finalising the documents".
Background:
- On 8 January, Graham said that Trump had given the green light to a bipartisan sanctions bill targeting Russia.
- In mid-November, Graham stated that Trump had given his "blessing" to Congress to approve the long-stalled legislation.
- Media reports indicate that Trump is willing to sign a law imposing sanctions on Russia, provided he keeps the authority to make the final decision on those measures.
