Reuters noted that the details of Georgieva's visit to Ukraine had been kept highly confidential due to security concerns. The IMF chief, who has close family ties to Ukraine, last visited the country in February 2023. Georgieva's brother is married to a Ukrainian woman and was in Kharkiv when Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

Ukraine and the IMF reached a preliminary agreement in November on a four-year, US$8.2 billion lending programme, contingent on several measures, including passing the budget and securing donor-backed financing guarantees.

IMF representatives say Ukraine has made progress and expect the board of directors to review the programme within a few weeks.
