Details: Trump said it was "a great honour" for him to meet Machado.
He called her "a wonderful woman who has been through so much".
Quote: "María presented me with her Nobel Peace Prize for the work I have done. Such a wonderful gesture of mutual respect. Thank you María!"
Previously: Machado announced that she had given her medal to Trump.
Earlier, the Norwegian Nobel Institute stated that the prize cannot be transferred.
Background:
- Earlier media reports said Trump had declined to back Machado, partly because of her decision to accept the Nobel Peace Prize.
- Reports also suggested that the CIA had advised Trump to support figures aligned with Nicolás Maduro rather than the opposition in Venezuela.
- After a US operation targeting Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, Trump said Machado would struggle to govern Venezuela because, in his view, she lacked popular support and respect.
- At present, the duties of president in Venezuela are being carried out by Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro's vice-president.
- However, as CNN previously reported, Machado possesses something Trump has long sought: a Nobel Peace Prize.
- Machado offered to give her award to the US president, and Trump said it would be an honour to receive it, despite the Norwegian Nobel Institute stating that the prize cannot be transferred.
