Zelenskyy: If Russia wanted to end war, it would not seek to threaten our nuclear power plants

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that if Russia truly wanted to end the war, it would focus on diplomacy rather than attempts to damage Ukraine's nuclear power plants.

Quote: "If the Russians seriously wanted to end the war, they'd focus on diplomacy – not on missile strikes, blackouts, and even attempts to damage our nuclear power plants.
We have information about the sites Russia reconnoitered in preparation for strikes. Everything clearly shows that diplomacy is not a priority for Russia.
This must be acknowledged. Pressure on the aggressor and the real cause of this war must continue. The cause is in Moscow. In the coming week, we will work to build this new pressure and a clear global position on Russia."
Details: Zelenskyy also said that nearly 58,000 people are working almost around the clock on repairing power grids, electricity generation facilities and district heating networks, with resources from Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways) and other state-owned companies involved in the effort.
He added that measures are currently being implemented to increase electricity imports.
Quote: "I want to thank our partners who are fulfilling our agreements on the supply of essential resources, machinery, and equipment. In particular, the implementation of our agreements with Italy has begun in recent days. Giorgia Meloni and I discussed this: now support packages – these are truly vital items, truly vital equipment – are being delivered to Ukraine."
Background:
- Defence Intelligence of Ukraine reported on 17 January that Russia is considering carrying out attacks on substations linked to Ukraine's nuclear power plants in a bid to force Ukraine to agree to unacceptable demands.
- Zelenskyy said, following a meeting with Oleh Ivashchenko, Head of Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, that Russia is preparing further strikes on Ukraine's energy system and infrastructure, including facilities that service nuclear power plants.
