Details: President Lai responded to Zelenskyy's speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on 22 January, where the Ukrainian leader said that Russia bypasses sanctions and obtains components for missiles and drones from Europe, the United States and Taiwan which are then used to attack Ukraine.
Reuters reported that Taiwan imposed sanctions on Russia in 2022 to prevent high-tech components being used for military purposes.
Quote: "We remain clear: any assistance to the aggressor or violations of international embargoes and export control regulations are unacceptable. We pray for peace to be restored to Ukraine soon."
For reference: Ukraine does not recognise Taiwan as an independent state and does not have an official representation, supporting the "one China" policy.
Background:
- At the forum in Davos, Zelenskyy said he expects Europe to take steps to tackle Russia's shadow fleet and tighten sanctions.
- He stressed that preventing Russia from producing missiles would be "cheaper" than spending money on rescuing Ukraine's energy system, which has been devastated by Russian strikes.
