Half of Europeans consider Trump an "enemy of Europe" – poll

A survey conducted after threats by the US president to seize Greenland shows that 51% of Europeans consider Donald Trump an "enemy of Europe".

Details: Only 8% of respondents described Trump as a "friend", and 9% said he was "neither a friend nor an enemy". A further 2% said they did not know.

Trump is perceived most negatively in Spain and Denmark, which found itself at the centre of the US president's threats over his desire to control the Danish Arctic territory of Greenland. In both countries, 58% of respondents consider Trump an enemy.

In Belgium, 56% of respondents believe the same.

In Germany and France, the figures are slightly lower, at 53% and 55% respectively.

In Italy, 52% of respondents view the US president as an enemy.

Poland is an exception in the survey: only 28% of respondents there consider Trump an enemy of Europe. Meanwhile, only 17% of Poles said they view him as a friend of Europe.

Among other questions put to participants was: "To what extent, in your opinion, does Donald Trump adhere to democratic principles?".

A total of 44% of all respondents said they perceive the US president as a dictator. Only 10% said Trump respects democratic principles.

This assessment increased by seven percentage points compared to December in the four countries where continuous polling was conducted – France, Germany, Spain and Italy. Even in Poland, a country that is generally more lenient towards Trump, only 13% of respondents believe that he respects democratic principles.

The survey was conducted between 13 and 19 January, after Trump's statements about his intention to take control of Greenland.

Background:

• Recent polls in Germany showed that Germans distrust the United States almost as much as Russia. A total of 76% of Germans expressed distrust of the US, with higher figures only for Russia, which 83% consider an unreliable partner.
• Meanwhile, almost half of Britons consider Trump an obstacle to peace in Ukraine.
