Details: Kos says she wants Ukraine to join the EU in 2027, but stresses that major preparatory work must come first.
"Yes, this is not only his desire (that of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy – European Pravda). It is also my desire and the desire of many member states, but we will see when this will be possible," Kos said when asked whether she shares Zelenskyy's desire for Ukraine to join the EU in 2027.
She explained that reforms and the establishment of the EU's fundamental principles must come first, "otherwise the country will not develop democratically and economically".
"So yes, we are working with many member states and my team here in Brussels to enable as soon as possible integration of Ukraine into the European Union," Kos stressed.
Background:
- Earlier, European Pravda reported that Kos will brief EU foreign ministers in Brussels on 29 January on the progress of preparations for a "prosperity plan" for Ukraine, in which the European Commission is involved.
- European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU and the US are close to an agreement on a "prosperity plan" for Ukraine based on five pillars: productivity, Ukraine's integration into the EU market, investment, strengthening donor coordination and reforms.
- Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that EU leaders at an EU summit had been presented with a confidential European Commission document that envisages Ukraine joining the European Union by 2027.
- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, for his part, has clearly stated that Ukraine's accession to the European Union in 2027 is not possible.
