Russia hands over 1,000 bodies to Ukraine, claiming they are Ukrainian soldiers

Ukraine has been handed another 1,000 bodies, which Russia claims are those of Ukrainian service members.

Quote: "Today [29 January – ed.], repatriation efforts brought 1,000 bodies (remains) of the fallen back to Ukraine, which Russia claims are Ukrainian defenders."

Details: Ukrainian investigators and experts will now work on identifying the repatriated bodies.

Background:

• This is the first return of the bodies of fallen Ukrainians in 2026.
• On 19 December 2025, 1,003 bodies were brought back to Ukraine, which the Russian side claimed belonged to Ukrainian service members.
