Details: Russia's 2nd Western District Military Court reported earlier that 20 people were killed and eight were believed missing after the missile cruiser Moskva was struck.
The court stated that the cruiser sank as a result of missile strikes by the Ukrainian military. It also revealed the official casualty figures: 20 crew members killed, 24 wounded and eight declared missing.
At least 20 of the dead were conscripts. Most of those who went down with the ship lived in annexed Crimea or Sevastopol (15 people).
Background:
- The Moskva cruiser, the flagship of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, was struck by a Ukrainian Neptune anti-ship missile system in mid-April 2022.
- Russia's Ministry of Defence initially reported an on-board explosion, claiming that the warship's ammunition had detonated and the crew had been evacuated, but that the ship "remained afloat". The ministry later claimed that the Moskva sank while being towed to Sevastopol in stormy conditions.
