Details: The incident on the Isaccea-Vulcănești-MGRES high-voltage line has damaged the energy system and led to disruptions.
The electricity transmission system operator, Moldelectrica, is working to stabilise the situation, and the power supply has already been restored in some areas.
Moldovan news outlet NewsMaker reported that Chișinău and its suburbs are known to have been affected, as well as Taraclia, Cahul and Anenii Noi.
Background:
- This news was reported at the same time as it emerged that metro services in Kyiv had been temporarily suspended and escalators were not operating due to a loss of voltage from external power supply centres.
- Kyiv City State Administration said there were emergency power outages in Kyiv, as in many other Ukrainian cities. It also reported disruptions to the water supply and heating in some districts of the capital.
- It is worth noting that US President Donald Trump said on 29 January that he had asked Russian leader Vladimir Putin to pause strikes on "Kyiv and various towns" for a week on humanitarian grounds, and that Putin had apparently agreed.
- Trump did not specify when the conversation took place or when the week was supposed to start.
- A new round of talks on a potential peace deal between Russia and Ukraine is expected to begin on 1 February. US State Secretary Marco Rubio has said that US Special Representative Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner will not be attending, but there "might be" a US presence.
