Kyiv still has 1,000 apartment buildings without heating

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has said that 1,000 apartment buildings in the capital remain without heating despite reconnections being made over the past day.

Details: Klitschko reported that over 1,500 apartment buildings in Kyiv left without heating due to an emergency situation in Ukraine's energy system were reconnected on the night of 31 January-1 February.

Utility workers and power engineers are continuing their work.

Background:

• On 31 January, a major breakdown in Ukraine's power system caused electricity to be cut off across large parts of the country.
• Denys Shmyhal, Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, reported on Saturday evening that power had been restored in all Ukrainian oblasts following the grid breakdown.
• President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the causes of the large-scale energy failure are still being investigated, but so far there is no evidence of external interference or a cyberattack; it most likely occurred due to ice on the power lines.
