President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that hundreds of buildings remain without heating in Kyiv.

Quote: "An extremely difficult situation with heating continues in Kyiv.

More than 500 apartment buildings are without heating. Repair work is still ongoing. And this certainly cannot be perceived as normal in a city where, for far more than a week now, the number of buildings without heating is hundreds every single day, regardless of the situation. Whether there are strikes or not, hundreds of buildings in Kyiv remain without heating. This means that the measures being taken in the city are not sufficient."

Details: Zelenskyy noted that he had heard a report from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine on invincibility centres and heating points in Kyiv. [Invincibility centres are heated premises stocked with food and power banks to assist residents facing hardships due to power cuts – ed.]

"More people are turning to them now, and additional centres have been set up in several districts. Hot meals are being provided. The 112 [general emergencies hot] line is operating to register all needs. There is also a government contact centre. At the very least, the city must work faster with government agencies in this area – so that people can receive timely assistance and accurate information," the president added.

He also reported that cogeneration capacity is effectively being increased almost daily in Kyiv Oblast.

"Thermal kits are being distributed to people, and this programme will be expanded. Around five thousand such thermal kits are distributed across the Kyiv region every day," the post said.

Background:

  • On 1 February, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration Oleksii Kuleba reported that 693 buildings still remain without heating in Kyiv.
  • Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that 3,419 high-rise buildings were still without heating, mainly on the right bank of the capital.
  • On 31 January, a system-wide breakdown occurred in Ukraine's energy system, leaving a significant part of Ukraine without power.
  • First Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said on Saturday evening that electricity supply had been restored in all oblasts of Ukraine after the system-wide accident.
  • Zelenskyy said that the causes of the large-scale energy accident were still being ascertained, but there is so far no confirmation of external interference or cyberattack, and it more likely happened due to icing on lines.
