Quote: "I held a coordination call. Reports were delivered from all regions following a massive Russian strike. The Russians launched more than 400 drones, many of them 'Shaheds', as well as nearly 40 missiles of various types."

Details: Zelenskyy said the Russian attack has caused significant damage to energy facilities, affecting the power situation in almost the whole country and resulting in major outages.

He said that this reflects Russia's overall attitude and its true intentions.

Quote: "So far, Russia has shown no willingness to end this war in the near future. And both in terms of the front line and of such massive strikes Russia continues a policy of the actual decimation of Ukraine."

More details: Zelenskyy stressed that Russian forces had deliberately struck energy facilities vital to the operation of Ukraine's nuclear power plants, endangering not only Ukraine's security but also the shared safety of the region and Europe.

Quote: "We believe that partners in America, in Europe, and in other states who want peace must view this with a clear head and act accordingly. Real pressure on Russia is needed so that real changes emerge in their intentions and the overall prospects.

We discussed in detail the energy supply situation in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast, Kharkiv and the region, Chernihiv and the region, Sumy, Poltava, Cherkasy and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts, our southern regions – Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, Kherson – as well as our Donetsk Oblast, Zaporizhzhia, Kropyvnytskyi and the region, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne, Volyn and Lviv oblasts.

Everywhere, the necessary services have been deployed to deal with the aftermath of the strike and carry out restoration work. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine is forming additional teams for rapid response work at energy facilities in the western regions."

Background:

  • Russia has attacked thermal power plants belonging to DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy company, in several oblasts, seriously damaging key equipment.
  • Russia has carried out its second large-scale attack on Ukraine's energy system since the beginning of the year, with energy facilities in eight oblasts coming under missile and drone strikes.
  • Ukraine's nuclear power plants were forced to reduce their generation capacity as a result of Russia's large-scale attack.
  • On 7 February, Russia carried out a combined large-scale attack on Ukraine. In Kyiv Oblast, a fire broke out at warehouses belonging to Roshen as a result of a nighttime Russian UAV attack.
