It is not known whether his meeting with the US delegation will take place before or after the Geneva round of talks.

Background:

  • Earlier on Friday, the Kremlin stated that the Russian delegation at the talks will be led by Putin's aide Vladimir Medinsky. It is worth noting that Medinsky was not a member of the Russian negotiating team at the trilateral talks that resumed earlier this year in the UAE.
  • The next round of Ukraine-US-Russia talks in Geneva on 17-18 February was announced by the head of the Ukrainian delegation, Rustem Umierov.
  • Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the new round of talks will include discussions of territorial issues.
  • Zelenskyy also said earlier that the United States has proposed ending Russia's war against Ukraine by the summer, as they will have a different priority later – the US congressional elections.
