Ukrainian troops have received around 4.4 million large-calibre artillery rounds under a Czech-led ammunition initiative since its inception.

Details: Pavel said that almost 2 million rounds were supplied to Ukraine in 2025 alone through the Czech-led initiative. Overall, the project has provided more than 50% of all large-calibre shells delivered to Ukraine, he noted.

Quote from Pavel: "So it can be said that it has been vital for Ukraine. And it continues to be so, because for the time being, we have no alternative to it. Czechia has contributed not only the initial impetus, but also the know-how of how to bring partners together, how to combine finances, resources, routes and logistics so that we can secure ammunition from around the world, wherever it is available, and deliver it to Ukraine under reasonable conditions and at reasonable prices in the shortest possible time."

More details: Pavel said the Czech-led supply model is considered successful by "at least 15 allies who are participating in the ammunition initiative financially".

"If you do not have secure and predictable supplies of ammunition, you cannot effectively plan defence," Pavel explained.

Pavel also addressed domestic criticism of the initiative, saying there is no evidence of corruption or lack of transparency. From the start, Czechia invited its largest donors to send auditors to monitor how the funds are spent.

The Czech-led initiative to supply heavy ammunition to Ukraine was launched in February 2024 by Pavel. The programme aims to provide Ukrainian forces with 155mm and 122mm artillery shells procured from countries outside the European Union.

The programme has received support from more than 18 countries, including the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, France and Poland, among others. Each participating country independently determines the level of funding and the types of ammunition to be purchased for subsequent delivery to Ukraine.

Background: Ukrainska Pravda reported earlier that in 2025, Ukraine received 1.8 million artillery rounds promised under the Czech-led initiative and that Prague pledged to continue the programme in 2026.
