Taras Levkovych was a senior police sergeant and a soldier who served with KORD, the National Police of Ukraine's special firearms unit, and spent more than a year fighting in Donetsk Oblast. He met 22-year-old Viktoriia on TikTok during a break between combat missions.

While on leave, he had asked her out on a date. He later said he had known from the first glance that it was love.

In August 2025, Taras suffered severe blast injuries during an assault operation and lost both legs. He was rescuing a wounded comrade. When Viktoriia learned he had been injured, she travelled to see him in hospital and they have been together ever since.

Later, on 29 October, a year after their first meeting, Taras proposed to Viktoriia at the UNBROKEN centre. She said yes.

Quote from the UNBROKEN centre: "And so, without waiting for spring, in the middle of February the couple became husband and wife. It was an incredibly moving ceremony with family and close friends. The best man, by the way, was also a soldier."

More details: Taras is still undergoing prosthetic fitting, so he spent almost the entire wedding in a wheelchair. However, he chose to give his vows standing on stubbies – short initial prostheses for people with high double lower-limb amputations that help them stand upright and prepare for further rehabilitation. In that moment, Taras said it mattered to him to stand before his bride.

"I promise to be your support for the rest of our lives. I promise to be the one you read about in books and seen in films. I promise to be the one who will protect our family. In joy and in sorrow, I promise to love you for the rest of our lives," Taras said in his vows to Viktoriia.
