Quote: "Hungary will block it. Until Ukraine resumes oil transit to Hungary and Slovakia via the Druzhba pipeline, we will not allow decisions important to Kyiv to move forward."

Background:

  • Following a Russian attack on the Brody oil hub in Ukraine's west and damage to the Druzhba pipeline, the governments of Slovakia and Hungary simultaneously declared a state of emergency on their domestic oil products markets. Both countries claim that Ukraine is deliberately not repairing the pipeline because it does not want to supply them with Russian oil.
  • Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has threatened to stop electricity supplies to Ukraine if oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline is not restored.
  • Hungary has also announced a suspension of diesel fuel supplies to Ukraine and blocked a €90 billion EU loan for Ukraine.
