Details: The embassy team drew the organisers' attention to the unacceptability of promoting a Russian festival while Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine continues.

In response, the Royal College of Music explained that the mention of the Kalinka festival was related to the retrospective part of the anniversary programme and referred to a Russian music event held in 2014.

At the same time, a representative of the college apologised for the misunderstanding and said that all digital materials would be updated to remove the relevant mention.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stressed that there should be no place for Russian culture, which is used as a tool by the aggressor state, on the international stage and in the global cultural space.

Background:

  • In January, the Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florence cancelled a performance by Russian artists who openly support the Kremlin regime's policy towards Ukraine.
  • A concert in the Netherlands by pianist Elisabeth Leonskaya was cancelled in November after she performed with pro-Putin musicians.
