Details: Witkoff said he and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, will be arriving in Geneva on Thursday for talks with Iran.
He said he expects to meet with Umierov in Switzerland.
Witkoff said the main purpose of his Geneva trip is to hold talks with Iran aimed at finding a diplomatic solution, but that he has spoken to Umierov, with whom he said he is in almost daily contact, and asked him to seek President Zelenskyy's approval for a meeting in Geneva.
He said the aim of the meeting is to continue the dialogue and explore different options for reaching a peace deal.
Witkoff also suggested Umierov could visit the US, but gave no further details.
Background:
- Trilateral talks between Ukraine, the US and Russia took place in Geneva on 17-18 February. Umierov said the parties had discussed possible parameters for ending the Russo-Ukrainian war.
- Following the trilateral meetings in Geneva, Zelenskyy said he saw progress in the military area of the talks, but not in the political one.
- Meanwhile, Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported that the Geneva talks had "got stuck" because of the positions put forward by Russia's chief negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky.
