Details: Witkoff indicated that part of the US approach has been to resolve other issues first, enabling the leaders to concentrate on territorial questions. He noted that there are many options and concepts to consider regarding territories.
Witkoff also suggested that the meeting could reaffirm previously discussed matters, particularly prosperity, economic growth and a loan to support Ukraine's system, while most importantly addressing territorial issues.
He said he hopes that a successful meeting could pave the way for a possible trilateral summit.
Background:
- Witkoff also announced plans to meet with Rustem Umierov, head of the Ukrainian negotiating team and Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, in Geneva.
- On 22 February, Witkoff suggested that "good news" on ending Russia's war against Ukraine could emerge in the coming weeks and has not ruled out a summit between Zelenskyy and Putin soon.
- Following trilateral meetings in Geneva on 17-18 February, Zelenskyy said he sees progress in the military area of the talks but not in the political one.
- On 20 February, Zelenskyy said another round of talks with Russia and the US on ending the war could take place before the end of the month.
