Electricity situation in Kyiv will remain difficult until at least April

Kyiv will not be able to return to standard power outage schedules until at least April, says Serhii Kovalenko, CEO of energy supplier Yasno.

Details: Kovalenko said there is no precise forecast as to when the city might return even to the previous schedules. Overall, he described the energy supply situation as "consistently challenging".
"As soon as the situation with the grid deficit improves, we will most likely be able to return to the standard schedules. When? I think it is difficult to expect a return to those schedules before April," he said on the programme Ye Rozmova.
At present, temporary power outage schedules are in place in Kyiv. It is difficult to predict when permanent schedules may return due to the consistently challenging situation in the energy system.
"In Kyiv, we currently have what you might call personalised temporary schedules, because the city remains uneven in terms of the ability to transmit electricity across different districts," Kovalenko explained.
He also noted that some residential buildings in the capital still have no heating, and therefore a separate approach to power outages applies to those buildings.
Background:
- Earlier, Yasno CEO Serhii Kovalenko explained why electricity bills in Kyiv may rise even when power is supplied only intermittently. In particular, bills may rise due to spikes in consumption after the electricity supply is restored. Electric motors in refrigerators, pumps and other appliances consume three to seven times more electricity when they are restarted.
- Previously, Kovalenko has also noted that some buildings may not appear in blackout schedules, as the new schedules are drawn up from scratch, and the same building may be included in two schedules if it has two phases.
