The projects concern a small and a large interconnector. The Ukrainian leader said he hopes the small interconnector will be completed by the end of this year. The large interconnector is planned to be built within two years.

Quote from Zelenskyy: "We are working to expand cross-border energy cooperation – building two new power transmission lines with Romania. Equally important is our ability to pursue projects together in resource extraction on the Black Sea shelf."

Details: The meeting also discussed projects in the oil and gas sector "that can support us now, including in light of the challenges related to the Middle East".

They also discussed the possibility of transporting American liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Ukraine through Romania.

"We are also working to open new border crossing points – and this will be achieved already this summer," Zelenskyy added.

Background:

  • Between 2 and 8 March, Ukraine imported 213,200 MWh of electricity, which is 30% less than the previous week.
  • The Ukrainian government plans to resume 4 GW of generation capacity and aims to build an additional 1.5 GW, hoping to attract €5 billion from partners for this purpose this year.
