Germany's Merz speaks with Trump about Ukraine and Iran

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and US President Donald Trump have discussed Ukraine, among other topics, during a phone call.

Details: Merz wrote that his conversation with Trump also covered the situation in Iran and Israel.

"We have agreed to remain in close contact. We will continue our discussions shortly," he added.

Background:

• It was recently reported that Merz is planning to invite Trump to Germany for an official visit in September amid tensions between Berlin and Washington over the war in Iran.
• Merz has also stated that if the US had consulted Berlin about the US-Israeli war against Iran, "we would have advised against taking this course of action".
