Details: The arbitral award states that the Chess Federation of Russia must cease all activities in the temporarily occupied territories of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts and Crimea within the next 90 days. The federation faces a three-year ban if the decision is not implemented.
The first ruling on the activities of the Chess Federation of Russia in the occupied territories was issued in 2024, when CAS imposed a €45,000 fine on the Russian side. The Ukrainian Chess Federation objected to the decision and filed an appeal, which was partially upheld.
Background: Earlier, Ukraine, with the support of four other countries, filed a complaint with CAS against a decision made by FIDE at its December General Assembly regarding the use of national symbols of Russia and Belarus.
