More than 9 GW of power generation capacity at Ukraine's thermal power plants, combined heat and power plants and hydroelectric power plants was damaged by the Russians during the 2025-2026 heating season, and energy workers have restored more than 4 GW of it.

He said that transmission system transformer equipment has been repaired, with a total capacity equivalent to about 30% of the entire transformer capacity of Latvia's energy system.

He also reported that in 2025 scheduled repairs with a combined capacity of 11.8 GW have been completed, making it possible for Ukraine to get through the heating season successfully.

Quote: "We are continuing to develop distributed generation. The total increase in installed capacity in 2025 amounted to 642.77 MW."

More details: Shmyhal added that new energy storage facilities with a capacity of 508 MW have been installed in Ukraine. That is 254 times more than during the 2024-2025 heating season.

Background:

  • Ukraine completed the heating season successfully despite numerous Russian attempts to destroy the country's energy system.
  • Russian forces carried out 129 attacks on facilities belonging to Naftogaz, Ukraine's largest national oil and gas company, over the 151 days of the heating season.
