Loading of crude oil at Russia's Sheskharis terminal in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk has been suspended after a large-scale drone attack and fire.

Details: The sources said the port has yet to estimate the extent of the damage. A previous attack on the Sheskharis terminal in early March led to loading being suspended for five days.

The terminal normally loads 700,000 barrels of crude a day. It is the main outlet for Russian oil exports on the Black Sea.

The shutdown will put additional strain on Russian infrastructure, which has repeatedly come under attack.

Reuters sources also said oil exports from Russia's main Baltic port of Ust-Luga has been suspended since last week after large-scale drone strikes and fires.

Background:

  • A large-scale fire broke out at the Sheskharis oil terminal in the Russian city of Novorossiysk following an attack by kamikaze drones on the night of 1-2 March. Later, the Ukrainian Defence Ministry confirmed the strike on the terminal.
  • Drones operated by Special Operations Centre Alpha (part of the Security Service of Ukraine), working together with Ukraine's defence forces, were behind a strike on the Sheskharis oil-loading terminal at the Russian seaport of Novorossiysk in Krasnodar Krai on the night of 5-6 April.
