Al Carns, UK Minister for the Armed Forces, has said Ukraine could play an important role in international efforts to ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Details: Carns also noted that his visit is intended to reassure Kyiv that the war in Ukraine remains a key priority for the UK in defence and security matters.

He played down tensions within NATO following US President Donald Trump's criticism of European allies for not joining the war against Iran, stressing that the Alliance remains the "backbone of our security".

Carns added that the UK could also learn a great deal from Ukraine's battlefield innovations, particularly in drone technology, data usage and artificial intelligence.

"It's a revolution in military affairs, and we need to move faster," he said.

Carns urged Ukraine to accelerate the export of its advanced technologies to secure a share of the global market before other countries catch up and to promote joint training and development with NATO allies.

Background:

  • Ukraine's Foreign Ministry reported recently that Kyiv had been involved in discussions on unblocking the Strait of Hormuz before the US and Iran agreed to a ceasefire.
  • US President Donald Trump has long criticised allies for not actively supporting the US, particularly in efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and has even threatened to withdraw the US from NATO.
  • On 11 April, Trump said the US has begun "clearing" the Strait of Hormuz as a "favour" to countries around the world.
