Slovak PM seeks to fly to Moscow via Poland

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who has been invited to a military parade in Moscow to mark Victory Day on 9 May, is now seeking to travel there via Poland after the Baltic states refused to allow his aircraft to cross their airspace.

Details: Poland has received a request from Slovakia for permission for Fico's aircraft to fly to Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maciej Wewiór said.

He added that the request is currently being reviewed.

Background:

• On 19 April, Fico complained that Lithuania and Latvia will not allow his aircraft to pass through their airspace so that he can attend a military parade in Moscow on 9 May.
• Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha thanked Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia for making that decision.
• Last year, the Baltic states also refused to allow Fico's aircraft to cross their airspace en route to Moscow.
• The ban on overflying the Baltic states obliged Fico to take a southern route to Moscow via Hungary, Romania, the Black Sea, Georgia and Russia.
