Germany's domestic intelligence service, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), and its cybersecurity authority, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), warned earlier this year about attacks targeting users of messaging apps, which were likely carried out by a state-backed actor.
On Friday, German federal prosecutors said they had been investigating phishing attacks on the Signal messaging app since mid-April, but declined to provide further details.
Russia has repeatedly denied involvement in hacking operations against other countries.
According to media reports, attackers compromised the Signal account of Julia Klöckner, the head of the Bundestag.
Background: Germany's Federal Ministry of Defence recently restricted the use of mobile phones at its headquarters amid concerns over espionage threats from Russia and China.
