Belgium to join agreement on special tribunal over Russia's aggression

Belgium plans to join the Extended Partial Agreement on the Special Tribunal to investigate the crime of aggression by Russia against Ukraine.

Details: Belgium will become the 24th country to declare its intention to join the agreement. The document envisages the establishment of a tribunal authorised to hold Russian political and military leaders accountable for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.

Background:

  • According to Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, the agreement will be put to a vote at a meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on 14–15 May in Chișinău.
  • Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset recently hinted that "important opportunities" to hold Russia accountable for its aggression against Ukraine would open up next month.
  • Earlier, the Office of the President of Ukraine outlined the steps required for the full launch of the Special Tribunal on the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.
