Russia's Perm cancels Victory Day parade following Ukrainian strikes on oil refinery

Dmitry Makhonin, Governor of Russia's Perm Krai, has announced that the military parade in Perm will not take place on 9 May, citing "security concerns".

Quote: "Following an operational meeting, a decision was taken not to hold the 9 May parade of the Perm garrison troops."

Details: Makhonin claimed this was done to ensure the safety of residents and "to avoid diverting the security forces from their tasks of protecting their fellow citizens".

Background:

  • On the morning of 7 May, reports began to come in from the Russian city of Perm regarding explosions and a fire near the Perm oil pipeline control station, which is over 1,500 km from the border with Ukraine.
  • Ukraine's General Staff subsequently reported that Ukrainian forces struck the Lukoil-owned Perm Oil Refinery on 7 May.
