Details: Zelenskyy stressed that Russia has responded to Ukraine's ceasefire proposal with new attacks. All day, reports of Russian strikes have been coming in from various oblasts: Donetsk, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts, the city and oblast of Sumy, Chernihiv Oblast, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. Russia has not stopped a single type of military activity.
Zelenskyy issued a reminder that Ukraine will act in kind. Ukraine will determine just responses depending on the situation overnight and tomorrow, 7 May.
Quote: "Russia has received a clear proposal from us for silence and diplomacy and knows how to contact Ukraine or our partners to agree on the details. But if the one person in Moscow who cannot live without war is only interested in one parade [on Victory Day] and nothing else, that is a different matter. Ukraine is ready to work for peace. Ukraine is striving to end this war with dignity. Russia has fought to the point where even its main parade now depends on us. And this is a clear signal: it is time to end it."
Background:
- Zelenskyy stated that Russia has violated the ceasefire introduced by Kyiv since the beginning of 6 May and said Ukraine will respond in kind.
- On 4 May, Zelenskyy announced a ceasefire starting from 00:00 on the night of 5-6 May. Russia did not respond in any way and continued its attacks on Ukraine.
- Earlier, Russia's Ministry of Defence unilaterally declared a "truce" for 8 and 9 May and warned that if the Victory Day parade in Moscow on 9 May is "disrupted", it will launch a large-scale missile strike on central Kyiv.
