Source: European Pravda, citing a senior EU official familiar with the security guarantees discussions, speaking on condition of anonymity
Details: EU member states will consider the possibility of using satellite monitoring to oversee compliance with a future peace agreement for Ukraine.
The source told European Pravda that the ministers will discuss how the European Union's contribution could strengthen security arrangements in the event of a peace agreement, which would come into force the day after its conclusion, and that they would also address the EU's participation in monitoring such an agreement.
He added that, alongside topics already raised during previous meetings, additional points will be included for discussion, including satellite monitoring.
The EU official also said that at the beginning of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who will personally travel to Brussels, will brief EU ministers on the current situation in Ukraine and on the battlefield, as well as on Ukraine's most urgent needs for European assistance.
The source stressed that there is a clear understanding within the European Union that Russia has no genuine intention of making sincere efforts to achieve a just and fair peace.
Background:
- As previously reported by European Pravda, on 11 May the EU also plans to impose new sanctions on Russian individuals over the abduction and deportation of Ukrainian children.
- The sanctions will be announced at a high-level meeting co-chaired by the European Union, Ukraine and Canada, aimed at outlining concrete steps to bring back children abducted by Russia to Ukraine and to hold Russia accountable.
- Earlier, the president of the Spanish Senate, Pedro Rollán, held a conference dedicated to bringing back Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, calling the forced deportation the most abhorrent act by Russia.
