Details: Investigators reached this conclusion following initial procedural actions at the scene and a preliminary examination of drone debris by experts involved in the investigation, combined with information already available to law enforcement agencies.
As previously reported, Latvian police opened a criminal case under Article 10 of the Criminal Code (crimes against the state) following the drone incident at the oil storage facility in Rēzeknē on 7 May.
Police urged citizens not to share any materials related to the incident on social media and instead submit them to the State Security Service. All such materials are being analysed and may prove useful for the investigation.
Several unmanned aerial vehicles entered Latvian airspace from Russia early in the morning on 7 May. It has not been confirmed whether the drones were Ukrainian or Russian.
At least four empty oil tanks were reportedly damaged.
Background: On 8 May, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Ukraine has never directed any drones towards Latvia. He added that Ukraine is considering sending its experts to provide direct assistance in strengthening the airspace security of the Baltic states following similar incidents.
