Details: Representatives of Belarus will now be able to take part in international competitions under their national flag in both individual disciplines and team events. UIPM said the decision was made in line with updated recommendations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The new rules will take effect in June 2026 during the World Cup event in Budapest. However, at the next World Cup event, which starts on 13 May in Pazardzhik, Bulgaria, Belarusian athletes will still compete as neutrals.
Background:
- On 7 May, the IOC recommended that sports federations lift restrictions on Belarusian athletes' participation in international competitions under their national flag.
- Currently, Belarusian representatives are allowed to compete under national symbols in aquatic sports, judo, sambo, taekwondo, football, futsal and beach soccer. In other sports, they can compete under a neutral status.
- Meanwhile, World Athletics, the governing body of athletics, has rejected the IOC recommendation to lift sanctions on Belarus.
