Details: The ministry stressed that Russia's latest threats amount to nothing more than blackmail.

Quote: "Moscow is effectively admitting that its shelling is aimed, among other things, at intimidating the foreign diplomatic corps. This admission will serve as valuable evidence in international legal proceedings against the aggressor state."

Details: The ministry is also prepared to assist with additional security measures for foreign diplomatic missions that request such support in response to Russian intimidation.

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry also thanked foreign diplomatic missions and diplomats who continue to work in Ukraine during the war. The ministry added that the best response to Russia's threats remains increasing pressure on the aggressor state.

Background:

  • On 25 May, the Russian Foreign Ministry claimed that Russian forces are beginning "systematic continuous strikes" against Ukrainian defence industry companies and "decision-making centres" in Kyiv. Moscow also urged foreigners, including diplomatic staff and employees of international organisations, to "leave Kyiv as soon as possible".
  • Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Russian threats of further strikes on Kyiv are intended to intimidate Western diplomats, but Ukraine does not expect such blackmail to succeed.
  • EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarína Mathernová said Western diplomats will not leave Kyiv despite Russia's renewed threats.
  • Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a phone call that the Russian military is "beginning" systematic strikes on facilities in Kyiv that Russia claims are being used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
