Kremlin says Putin met with former German chancellor Schröder
The Kremlin has said that Russian leader Vladimir Putin held a one-on-one meeting with former German chancellor Gerhard Schröder.
Source: Interfax, citing Yuri Ushakov, adviser to the Russian leader, as reported by European Pravda
Details: According to Ushakov, the conversation between Putin and Schröder took place in Moscow, in the Kremlin. He described it as "good".
"The conversation was friendly, it took place in a tête-à-tête format, face to face. To be honest, I do not know the details. It took place in Moscow, in the Kremlin," Putin's adviser said.
On 2 June, media reported that Schröder had been on a visit to the Russian capital, Moscow. The 82-year-old former leader of the Social Democratic Party is considered a personal friend of the Russian leader; he continued to work for Russian energy companies even after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Background:
- Putin floated Schröder as a possible negotiator to bring the European side into talks on ending the war, a proposal rejected by Ukraine.
- Berlin also does not regard Putin's proposal on Schröder as an EU negotiator with Russia as serious and sees it as an attempt to sow division in Europe and among German politicians.
- Oleksii Makeiev, Ukraine's Ambassador to Germany, said someone who had represented Russian interests in Germany for years has "neither the moral nor political legitimacy to act as a mediator today".
