Details: Reuters said that in the letter dated 26 June, whose recipients are not identified, Fedorov says Ukraine's total defence needs for 2026 amount to around €136 billion, €53 billion of which can be covered by the state budget.
Ukraine is also due to receive €28.3 billion for defence under the EU's €90 billion financial support package. However, Fedorov notes that even with those funds, a significant share of Ukraine's defence needs will remain unfunded.
He argues that funding from the European Peace Facility could become one of Europe's most significant contributions to Ukraine's defence this year, but only if these resources are directed where they can generate the greatest and most immediate military effect.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged EU leaders during a European Council meeting on 18 June to ensure the swift disbursement of the €6 billion in European Peace Facility funding that has been unblocked for Ukraine.
