Details: The German chancellor said that Russia would not be able to achieve victory through military means, adding that ending the war sooner would also be in Russia's own interest.
"Russia has no chance of winning this war," he said. "They will not achieve their military objectives, and the sooner we bring this war to an end, the better it will be for Europe, the better it will be for Russia, and the better it will be for world peace."
He added that Germany and its allies would continue providing assistance to Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Background:
- Earlier, Merz argued that Ukraine is now in a stronger position on the battlefield and that Russia should begin negotiations on freezing the front line.
- He also announced that Germany would use the NATO summit to push for new financial commitments from European partners to support Ukraine.
- The summit's final declaration is expected to describe Russia as a threat to Euro-Atlantic security and include a pledge by NATO member states to provide Ukraine with €70 billion in military assistance annually in 2026 and 2027.
