"They are just minutes from Berlin": German foreign minister warns of Russian Iskander missile threat

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has said that Russia continues to pose a threat to Europe's security and that its Iskander missiles stationed in Kaliningrad could reach the German capital within minutes.

Details: Differing views on Russia remain a major point of tension in relations between Germany and South Africa, which Wadephul is currently visiting. Now that Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine has entered its fifth year, South Africa has still not condemned the invasion. As a founding member of BRICS, the country has long maintained close ties with Moscow and Beijing.

Speaking to students in Johannesburg, Wadephul called for a different approach.

"We have seen all too clearly that Russia deceived us for many years and continues to pose an existential threat to our security. The Iskander missiles that Russia has deployed in Kaliningrad would need only a few minutes to reach Berlin. This is part of today's strategic reality in Europe," he said.

Wadephul also said he disagrees with US President Donald Trump, who has said he intends to exclude South Africa from the next G20 summit in Miami.
