Air quality in Kyiv deteriorates sharply after Russian attack sparks major fires

Air pollution has reached high levels across all districts of Kyiv following large fires caused by an overnight Russian missile and drone attack.

Details: According to online air quality monitoring maps, elevated concentrations of harmful pollutants have been recorded across every district of the Ukrainian capital.

Air Quality Index (AQI) readings have reached orange and red hazard levels in many parts of the city.

The highest pollution levels have been recorded in the north and west of the capital. Monitoring stations in the Obolonskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts registered AQI readings ranging from 140 to 174, compared with a normal level of up to 50.

High levels of air pollution have also been recorded in the Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi and Solomianskyi districts.

Background:

• Russian forces conducted a large-scale ballistic missile attack on Kyiv on the night of 4-5 August.
• Missile strikes and falling debris sparked major fires at large warehouse facilities in the Obolonskyi, Desnianskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts.
• A missile strike destroyed a house and caused a leak of around 300 litres of ammonia in the Holosiivskyi district.
• The overnight Russian attack killed one woman and injured at least 22 people.
