Ukraine probes sabotage and safety breach in Khmelnytskyi ammunition depot explosions, body parts found

The State Bureau of Investigation is examining two possible causes of the ammunition explosions at a military training ground in Khmelnytskyi: violations of ammunition handling procedures and sabotage. Human body parts have been discovered during the search operations.

Details: The State Bureau of Investigation said the uncontrolled detonation of ammunition began at around 11:55 on 31 July at a military facility on the outskirts of Khmelnytskyi and continued almost until the end of the day.

Details: As of 3 August, five service members remain missing. Early reports indicate that they were unloading ammunition at a military warehouse when the initial explosion occurred.

During search operations, investigators recovered human remains. These have been sent for forensic pathology examination and DNA analysis to identify the victims.

The State Bureau of Investigation also reported that eight service members were injured in the explosions.

One line of inquiry is that breaches of regulations during the transport or unloading of ammunition may have triggered the initial blast, which subsequently caused the chain of detonations. Investigators are also examining the possibility of sabotage aimed at destroying military equipment and ammunition.
