Polish president’s aide urges PM to "find the courage" to formally strip Zelenskyy of Poland's highest honour

Zbigniew Bogucki, Head of the Chancellery of the President of Poland Karol Nawrocki, has called on Prime Minister Donald Tusk to "find the courage" to sign the decision formally stripping Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle, Poland's highest state honour.

Details: Most of Bogucki's post criticised Tusk over the appointment of judges, but he concluded by referring to the earlier controversy surrounding the decision to revoke the Polish state honour awarded to the Ukrainian president.

Quote: "Instead of putting meaningless signatures on documents appointing judicial assessors, which have always required only the signature of the president of the Republic of Poland, I urge you to find the courage to fulfil your duty and finally sign the presidential decision to strip the president of Ukraine of the Order of the White Eagle."

Details: It is noted that when President Karol Nawrocki decided to revoke Zelenskyy's Order of the White Eagle, the decision also required Donald Tusk's signature. However, the Ukrainian president returned the decoration before that procedure was completed.

Background:

• On the evening of 19 June, Nawrocki took the decision to strip Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle in connection with the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after the Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. He said Poland would not allow EU accession for those who do not understand the need to renounce the "cult of totalitarianism and violence".
• On 3 July, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha met his Polish counterpart Radosław Sikorski in Warsaw and proposed a package of anti-crisis measures aimed at easing tensions in relations between the two countries.
