Kyiv's Kyrylivske Lake polluted again after Russian attack

Following Russia's overnight attack on Kyiv on 7-8 August, a renewed minor oil contamination was detected in Kyrylivske Lake and the Syrets stream based on organoleptic indicators.

Details: The situation was complicated by heavy rainfall and a rapid rise in water levels in both the stream and the lake. As a result, all containment booms used to localise the pollution were torn away.

Municipal company Pleso responded promptly, taking the necessary measures to restore the containment system and prevent further spread of the pollution.

Specialist employees from Pleso have also collected water samples for laboratory testing. The results will be used for ongoing monitoring of the environmental condition of Kyrylivske Lake and the Syrets stream.

Background

After a Russian strike on a petrol station in Kyiv's Obolon district on the night of 1-2 July, more than 350 tonnes of oil products and emulsions entered Kyrylivske Lake.
On 17 July, emergency workers completed the removal of oil products from the surface of the lake.
