Russian ballistic strike halts Zaporizhzhia steel plant: 7 killed, 21 injured

The Zaporizhstal (Zaporizhzhia Steel Works), one of the leading companies in the metallurgical industry in Ukraine, has completely halted operations following a Russian ballistic missile strike. Seven employees of the plant were killed and another 21 people were injured.

Details: The strike occurred immediately after an air-raid warning was issued, as employees were making their way to shelters. The company said it was providing assistance to the injured and the families of those killed.

"Metinvest's Zaporizhzhia-based companies are civilian industrial facilities that provide employment for tens of thousands of people and produce metallurgical and coke-chemical products," the group said in a statement.

The attack damaged energy facilities and infrastructure at Metinvest's Zaporizhzhia companies, as well as the main and auxiliary facilities of the coke and blast-furnace production operations.

Operations at Zaporizhstal have been completely halted. Other production sites are operating at reduced capacity.

Background: In December 2025, a Russian attack on energy infrastructure completely cut off power to Zaporizhstal and caused an emergency shutdown of production. In January, the plant again halted all production processes after losing external power supply following a Russian attack.
