Ukrainian law enforcement officials charge Russia's Kursk detention centre staff with torturing and beating civilians

Ukrainian law enforcement officials have charged two employees of a detention centre in Kursk, Russia, with systematically torturing Ukrainian civilians. The suspects beat the illegally detained civilians with their hands and a baton, and tortured them with electric shocks.

Details: According to the investigation, two employees of Detention Centre No. 1 of the Federal Penitentiary Service Directorate for Kursk Oblast brutally mistreated at least five civilians.

They subjected them to electric shocks and beat them with their hands, feet and a plastic baton on various parts of their bodies. The violence was carried out systematically, in violation of the requirements of international humanitarian law.

The Russian detention centre employees have been charged with cruel treatment of civilians committed by a group of people acting in prior collusion under Article 438.1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The crime is punishable by imprisonment of 8 and 12 years.

Background: During their captivity in Russia, Ukrainians have been subjected to torture and humiliation by Russian doctors and nurses. Those released from captivity have said they were denied medical treatment, beaten with stun guns and given medication only after obeying the command, "On your knees!"
