Captured Russian soldier who raped civilian woman in Donetsk Oblast for two months sentenced to 12 years in prison

A Russian serviceman has been sentenced in Donetsk Oblast for repeatedly raping a civilian woman in a village in the Pokrovsk district over a period of two months.

Details: The man will serve 12 years in prison.

The 50-year-old man, from Russia's Sverdlovsk Oblast, had spent 32 years in prison for robbery and armed robbery. While serving his sentence, he signed a contract with the Russian Armed Forces and became a rifleman with the 114th Guards Motor Rifle Brigade of the 51st Guards Combined Arms Army.

In September 2025, the serviceman entered a village in the Pokrovsk district of Donetsk Oblast as part of a small infantry group. He and two other Russian servicemen occupied the basement of a house.

Two locals, a woman and a man, were also there, sheltering from attacks. The man was killed during one of the strikes. The woman was then left alone with three armed Russian servicemen, unable to defend herself or leave the basement.

"In early October, one of them began sexually assaulting her," law enforcement officials said. "The court found that the abuse became systematic and went on for around two months. The serviceman threatened to kill the victim if she rejected him."

Ukrainian forces captured the Russian serviceman in December 2025, bringing his abuse of the woman to an end.

The man pleaded not guilty in court. However, based on the evidence, he was found guilty of a war crime involving ill-treatment of civilians under Article 438.1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Previously: The so-called head of a Donetsk pre-trial detention centre was charged with ill-treatment of civilians. He held at least five people in inhumane conditions, including mould and rats, lack of adequate food or water, and people with infectious diseases being kept together with healthy prisoners.
