Details: The report emerged after a US Air Force Boeing C-17A Globemaster III transport aircraft and a motorcade of American diplomats were spotted at a Moscow airport.
Later, sources familiar with the matter said that Ratcliffe had arrived in Moscow, although there has been no official confirmation so far.
The last time a CIA director personally visited Russia was in November 2021. William Burns travelled to Moscow then to warn the Kremlin at the highest level that the US knew about preparations for a large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Background:
- On 1 August, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced efforts in the coming weeks to explore the possibility of resuming peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.
- Media reports said that US President Donald Trump's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner could visit Kyiv on Ukraine's Independence Day. However, this did not happen.
