Polish fighter jets intercept Russian reconnaissance aircraft threatening civil aviation

Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has reported another incident over the Baltic Sea involving a Russian reconnaissance aircraft.

Details: Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that Polish airspace was not violated, but the Russian aircraft posed a threat to civil aviation.

Quote: "Another incident has occurred over the Baltic Sea involving a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft. 40 km north of Ustka, our fighter jets intercepted a Russian aircraft which had not switched on its identification devices and posed a threat to civil aviation. There was no violation of Polish airspace."

Background:

  • This was the second such incident this week. On 31 August, Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft 30 km north of the town of Łeba.
  • In July, Poland was also forced to scramble its aircraft to intercept two Russian Su-30SM2 fighter jets that had taken off from Kaliningrad Oblast.
