Kremlin believes Russia's victory in war against Ukraine is imminent

Dmitriy Peskov, the Russian leader's press secretary, believes that the Russian forces may soon achieve victory in the war against Ukraine.

Details: According to Peskov, the war started by Russia could already have ended had the Ukrainian authorities been able to adopt a series of decisions specified by Russia to bring it to a close.

Background:

• Earlier, US presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited Moscow and then Kyiv, where they held talks with Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
• Following the three rounds of talks, Zelenskyy said the discussions had covered not only potential parameters for ending the war but also short-term support for Ukraine.
• He also said that several new ideas regarding the next stage of the peace negotiations had been put forward during the talks in Kyiv with the US envoys and Ukraine's European partners.
• Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian ruler, said Vladimir Putin told the US envoys during Saturday's talks that he is confident his war aims will be achieved. The White House described the talks as "substantive" and announced that the next steps will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
• On 3 September, Putin said that the direct participants in the war – Ukraine and Russia – should be the ones to negotiate an end to it.
